Telangana's Rabi Crop Sowing Sees 12.7% Growth: Key Highlights

Sowing of Rabi Crops in Telangana

As of the last Wednesday, Telangana has sown rabi crops across 7.5 million acres, up from 6.7 million acres in the same period last year. This 12.7% increase is significant, especially considering that the normal acreage for the season is 6.4 million acres. The delayed monsoon this year pushed back the sowing period, but the state’s farmers have made up for lost time.

Key Crops and Acreage Growth

  • Maize: The acreage under maize has increased sharply by 26.7%, reaching 841,835 acres, compared to 664,180 acres last year.
  • Paddy: The area sown with paddy has risen to 5.7 million acres, up from 5.1 million acres in the previous year.
  • Jowar: Similarly, jowar acreage has grown to 333,033 acres from 231,426 acres last year.

These crops are a significant part of the rabi season, which starts in October and concludes with harvests from February to May.

Changes in Pulse and Oilseed Acreage

  • Chana (Gram): Acreage under chana has decreased to 221,037 acres from 255,337 acres last year.
  • Urad (Black Gram): On the other hand, acreage under urad has risen to 49,213 acres, up from 35,602 acres a year ago.
  • Total Pulses: The overall area sown with pulses has decreased to 297,987 acres, down from 319,627 acres in the previous year.
  • Oilseeds: The total area sown with oilseeds has increased to 304,704 acres, compared to 272,564 acres last year. Groundnut acreage alone has grown from 209,817 acres to 246,349 acres this year.

Other Crops in Focus

  • Tobacco: Acreage for tobacco has increased to 18,092 acres, up from 9,902 acres last year.
  • Sugarcane: Sugarcane acreage has also grown to 15,612 acres, up from 4,525 acres in the previous year.

Crop Harvest and Current Status

Paddy is currently in the “grain formation to grain filling” stage, while the harvest of groundnut, sunflower, urad, and chana has already begun and is at its peak stage. This shows that farmers are progressing well in managing their harvests despite the delayed sowing period.

Water Levels and Other Insights

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana is notably higher this year. As of Wednesday, the water level stood at 423.776 billion cubic metres, compared to 266.45 billion cubic metres last year, indicating better water availability for irrigation.

Conclusion

This year’s rabi crop sowing in Telangana has shown positive growth, with several crops like maize, paddy, and oilseeds witnessing a rise in acreage. The increase in crop sowing is a positive sign for the state’s agricultural output, and with good water levels in reservoirs, farmers are hopeful for a successful harvest.
